Having fallen asleep so early the night before, I woke up real early and felt totally refreshed. As mentioned in previous post, I did laundry, enjoyed a long breakfast in the bistro, did some minor repairs and such, then took off. Not a lot to report. Got some light rain and narrowly avoided heavier rain.
The town of Bedrock was ghost-y.
Crossed over into Utah
…and then called it a day after passing through La Sal. Set up camp in a medium rain. My bivvy is not so great to hang out in when it’s raining, but it’s so nice and small, I don’t really mind being couped up in those cases. I’m pretty sure I woke up to the sound of the rain going away, checked the time and it was 4am. The next couple of hours, as the sky cleared up, got real cold and when I got up there was a crust of ice on the bivvy. Again, not a super toasty/restful night, but not too bad either.
The morning light was really pretty as the sun burned off the mist, and the scenery went from sage brush green and yellow to classic wiley coyote orange.
Got into Moab at 10:30am, and stopped by the Hostel I had booked for the night to drop off some bags, and then headed to Arches. There’s no shortage of photos of the amazing landscapes in this place, so I’ll spare you even more here (I’ve published some to my photospheres page too, thought). But here’s the balancing rock.
And here’s the most famous arch in the world, the delicate one…
Here’s a tracing of my route on the previously mentioned paper map of bicycle routes from the CO DoT.
And, as usually, a screenshot of Google Map’s Timeline account of my trajectory for the day:
So, not much to report from the last couple of days, really. I did try to take the road for 4x4s in Arches NP to make a loop of my day there, but I quickly determined it was too sandy when I took a tumble that was a bit harder than the one I took a few days ago and did not leave me in the mood for a selfie. But no damage to the bike and only a couple of scrapes and bruises for me, so all is good.
It is 6:45 in the morning of April 28 as I write this. I’ll be meeting up with my new friend from Steamboat Springs in a little under an hour, heading out to Canyonlands and meeting her folks. It rained all night last night, though it’s just let up. But all the talk in the hostel last night was of lots of rain over the next few days, and so we could be heading out for something of a mis-adventure. But the attitudes and outlooks of our crew seem in excellent alignment, and while I’m a little trepidatious, I’m no less excited than I was when the plan was hatched (for me) a week ago.
In any case, it’s pretty likely that I won’t have internet access until at least April 30, and thus, dear reader, you won’t have any updates from me until then either.
