USA : CO : Tour Start : Apr 2016

imageI’m writing this from my sister, Julia’s, place in Loveland, CO.  I got here about a week ago, and probably would have set out on my open-ended bike tour to and through Central America sooner had a snowstorm not rolled in 3 days ago.  It’s come and gone, and tomorrow she’ll drive me West somewhere TBD, up into the mountains from where I’ll set off.  A cheat to commence my trip, but fuggit, it’s still snowy up there and I have gear that’s more suited to tropics than snow-covered peaks.

imageI drove down here from Seattle to get rid of the car (gave it to sis) and get far enough South so that weather should be reasonably favorable.  I don’t have a set date for my return, though a month ago I was estimating early to mid June and now I’m estimating early to mid July.  So far, it’s like any other project, the estimated completion date is in N weeks, and N doesn’t change in time.

My friend Jeff joined me for the ride down.  For the first few hundred miles, we took small back roads and visited some Ghost(-ish) towns

I got to visit Carolyn in Salt Lake City, who I met and then bicycled with for 3 weeks in the Balkans last summer.  She and her friend Matt took me for a climb.

In Wyoming, we stayed with Jeff’s friend Micha.  Actually we stayed with Micha’s friend David.  Here are Jeff and Micha contemplating the wisdom of 4×4-ing on a muddy remote road with an impending rainstorm.

Here’s a pic from a bike ride (or more accurately, a bike push) up a hill outside of Reliance, WY the following morning.

All in all, it was a really nice road trip.  It’s been a nice visit with Julia and Steve (and Steve’s family).  But now that the snow has melted away, I’ve wrapped up all loose ends (and loose ends of loose ends), and Julie has the day off tomorrow (Tuesday) to provide the aforementioned ‘cheat’ lift, it’s time for me to get on the bike and head Southwest!
